When it rains…

We hiked 12 miles today under a threatening sky that finally let loose 1.5 miles from the shelter.  Boo hoo.  Arrived at a shelter (Derrick’s Knob) already filled to capacity and muscled 1.5 spaces for the two of us. This is actually better than some.

The mood is festive and people are welcoming every new drenched person who ducks through the tarp – all who are now destined to set up their hammocks and tents in the rain.

Someone was here before the rain and dragged in some firewood which is probably why it is at least 45 degrees in here- and not colder. Someone has a radio or ipod so there is a little music and singing.  And we are all breaking the rules by eating in here.  What can you do but hope the mice like someone else’s stuff better and that no self respecting bear will come out in this weather?

If you had suggested even 2 days ago that I would stay in the shelter rather than set up the tent I would have looked at you cross eyed but the Smoky Mountain park requires that the shelter be full before allowing tents and last night we bent to the fear of fine and made friends with the mice.

Today required no hesitation. No reception here but will post when there is.  April 24, 2013.

About dragonfly2013at

Years ago i was walking in nature and a dragonfly landed on my hand. My hiking companion commented,"Change is coming in your life." Indeed, it was! I worked in business where pumps were the fashion. I left it for work where orange shoes are appreciated. This suits me. I love what I do. I just need a break to refresh and so I am! I am the 4th of 11 children. Years ago orange shoes assured that I would not be left behind (we moved a lot)...or suffer face first in a snow drift for too long. I will wear orange laces on the hike. Orange is not in hiking boot fashion at this time. Blessings on the journey. Dragonfly
